Peace Music Festival (Through Overwhelming Strength)
by and with Hong-Do Leeby and with Hong-Do Lee
In the spring of 2025, young Seoul playwright Hong-Do Lee was a guest at the Residenztheater as part of a WELT/BÜHNE writing residency. Known for his dark comedies that use satire and parody to examine Korean society and the art scene critically, Lee blends literary references with surrealist theatre techniques. His new play «Peace Music Festival (Through Overwhelming Strength)» follows this tradition, offering a nearly prophetic portrayal of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, who was later removed from office, while also addressing ongoing tensions with North Korea. Premiering in November 2024, the play garnered significant attention in South Korea. It will be presented outside the country for the first time at the WELT/BÜHNE festival. Resident director Alexander Eisenach will stage the reading. Following the performance, Lee will discuss his writing process, the theatre scene, and the current political climate in South Korea.
