Das Kind (The child)
by Naghmeh Saminiby Naghmeh Samini
Three women are apprehended on a Western European coast and interrogated by the authorities. They come from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya. What unites them is their escape to Europe – and a newborn baby found in their care.
One by one, they face questioning by an immigration officer. All applications for entry are denied. But what will happen to the baby? Each woman denies being the mother, hoping to protect the child from an uncertain and potentially dangerous future. When the officer demands a DNA test, the translator intervenes.
This gripping play by Iranian author Naghmeh Samini is a powerful call for peace and equality. It has been brought to the stage by Tehran-based director Afsaneh Mahian, who uses minimal theatrical means to striking effect, supported by a compelling three-person cast. Mahian is the founder of Iran’s Shieveh Theatre Company, which has been active for over 25 years and has been invited to festivals worldwide.
