No break
Rat, whose real name is Nina, Paul and Alex are seventeen and bound together by a very close friendship: an inseparable trio. They spend every minute of their spare time together, challenge each other emotionally and intellectually and find an affinity and dependability that they often miss in their families. The moment the young trainee teacher Mr Spitzing walks through the door of their classroom, he immediately unsettles their stable world. All three of them feel drawn in different ways to this charismatic man. And Spitzing too soon shows an interest in this unlikely group. He is not afraid of overstepping boundaries, abandons professional distance, meets up with them outside school and becomes part of the group. At his suggestion the school trip does not visit Tuscany, but Auschwitz. At the memorial site of the concentration camp an incident then occurs which will bring their relationship to a highly emotional end.
With «More Black Than Purple», the Munich-based writer and journalist Lena Gorelik has written one of the most important books for young people of recent years, in which she examines the way we now deal with the Nazi past in an extremely telling way. For this production by the youth club «Xtra», in which young people from Munich act alongside an actor from the theatre’s resident company, the author has adapted her own novel for the stage.
