Welt/Bühne - I have a drum

Zum ersten Mal im deutschsprachigen Raum ist mit dem Spektakel «I have a drum» die Truppe gnoma Nshya zu erleben, die die vielseitige Künstlerin und Aktivistin Odile Gakire Katese 2004 in Ruanda gründete. Heute gilt diese als eine der besten Trommelformationen weltweit. Odile Gakire Katese begehrte damit gegen das Gesetz auf, dass die Kunst und das kulturelle Erbe des Trommelns ausschließlich Männern vorbehalten war. Damit leitete sie einen gesellschaftlichen Paradigmenwechsel ein, der das Leben der Frauen nachhaltig verändert hat. Teilhabe, Selbstbestimmung und Gleichberechtigung sind für sie Realität geworden.

Seitdem bereist Katese mit ihrer Kompanie, deren Wertekodex Respekt, Freiheit genauso wie Lebensfreude umfasst, die Welt und verbindet bei ihren Auftritten auf einzigartige und mitreißende Weise Musik, Tanz und poetische Texte, die traditionelle Überlieferungen in unmittelbaren Bezug zum Heute setzen und auch die Traumata des Genozids aus dem Jahr 1994 verarbeiten.

The first opportunity in German-speaking territories to experience the spectacular performance «I Have a Drum» by the Ignoma Nshya company, which was founded by the multi-talented artist and activist Odile Gakire Katese in Rwanda in 2004. The group is now regarded as one of the world’s leading drum ensembles. Odile Gakire Katese’s actions defied the law that the art and cultural legacy of drumming was reserved exclusively for men. In doing so, she initiated a paradigm shift that has brought lasting change to women’s lives. Participation, autonomy and equal rights are now reality for them.  

Ever since, Katese has toured the world with her company, whose values include taking pleasure in life as well as respect and freedom and whose performances are a unique combination of music, dance and poetic texts, placing traditional forms in a direct, contemporary context as well as coming to terms with the traumas of the genocide in 1994.
