Koleka Putuma ist eine mehrfach ausgezeichnete Theatermacherin, Schriftstellerin und Dichterin. In ihrer Arbeit untersucht sie die Beziehung zwischen Identität, Erinnerung und Dokumentationspraktiken durch Forschung, Performance, Technologie und Schreiben.

Ihr Bestseller-Debüt, der Gedichtband «Collective Amnesia», hat die südafrikanische Literaturszene im Sturm erobert. Seit seiner Veröffentlichung im April 2017 befindet sich das Buch in der zwölften Auflage und ist an südafrikanischen Universitäten und in der ganzen Welt Teil des Lehrplans.

«Collective Amnesia» erhielt den Glenna Luschei Prize for African Poetry 2018, wurde von der City Press zum Buch des Jahres 2017 und von The Sunday Times und Quartz Africa zu einem der besten Bücher des Jahres 2017 gekürt. Es wurde ins Spanische (Flores Rara, 2019), Deutsche (Wunderhorn Verlag, 2019), Dänische (Rebel with a Cause, 2019), Niederländische (Poeziecentrum, 2020) und Schwedische (Rámus förlag) übersetzt. Demnächst erscheinende Übersetzungen: Portugiesisch (Editora Trinta Zero Nove), und Italienisch (Arcipelago itaca), Französisch (éditions LansKine).

Im April 2021 erschien bei Manyano Media ihr zweiter Gedichtband «Hullo, Bu-Bye, Koko, Come In», der demnächst auch ins Niederländische, Dänische und Französische übersetzt wird.

Zu ihren Theaterarbeiten gehören die Bühnenadaption von «Hullo, Bu-bye, Koko, Come In», UHM, Woza Sarafina, Mbuzeni und No Easter Sunday For Queers. Zu ihren Theaterstücken für ein junges Publikum gehören Ekhaya (2 - 7 Jahre) und SCOOP: Kitchen play for carers and babes, das erste südafrikanische Theaterstück für ein Publikum im Alter von 0 - 12 Monaten.

Im Jahr 2022 wurde Putuma mit dem Standard Bank Young Artist Award ausgezeichnet - eine Auszeichnung, die zum ersten Mal für Poesie vergeben wurde. Sie ist Finalistin der Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative für Theater, eine Forbes Africa Under 30 Honoree, Empfängerin des Imbewu Trust Scribe Playwriting Award, des Mbokodo Rising Light Award, des CASA playwriting award und des Distell Playwriting Award 2019 für ihr Stück No Easter Sunday for Queers. Koleka Putuma is a multi-award-winning theatre practitioner, writer and poet. Her work investigates the relationship between identity, memory, and documentation practices through research, performance, technology, and writing.

Her bestselling debut collection of poems «Collective Amnesia» took the South African literary scene by storm. Since its publication in April 2017, the book is in its 12th print run and is prescribed for study at tertiary level in South African Universities and across the world.

Her theatre works include the stage adaption of Hullo, Bu-bye, Koko, Come In, UHM, Woza Sarafina, Mbuzeni and No Easter Sunday For Queers. Her theatre for young audiences include Ekhaya (2 – 7 year olds), and SCOOP: Kitchen play for carers and babes, the first South African theatre work for audiences aged 0 – 12 months old.

In 2022, Putuma was awarded the Standard Bank Young Artist Award - a first time award for Poetry.
